Music Camp
Music at Long Bay Camp
Long Bay’s music camp inspires campers to learn new instruments and play music like they have never played before! Campers who have experienced a music workshop often continue a musical program throughout the school year. For many campers, our music camp program is a life changing experience.
Music – String Into Action!
Instructor: Duncan Gillis
Dates Available: Session A – July 8 – July 14, 2012
The Ukulele has definitely become a very popular instrument in the last few years. Campers will learn some simple chords, then use those chords in some well-known songs, and maybe even write a tune or two of our own! If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to play guitar, the Uke is a great way to start. If you already know how to play guitar, the Uke is a bonus! (If you have a Ukulele of your own, please bring it with you. Otherwise, Long Bay Camp can pick one up for you to take home for an additional $30.00. You may choose from a variety of colours: red, orange, lime-green, royal blue, purple, pink, brown/natural)

Whether you call it a tin whistle, pennywhistle, tin flute, Irish whistle or just plain whistle, it is one of the sweet sounds of Celtic music! During this music workshop campers will learn the basics of the tin whistle through a series of easy steps. They will learn to play a progression of notes, and then build these notes into simple tunes. Once they’ve mastered the basics, they’ll learn some of the best-loved Folk tunes of all time. No previous training needed. Just bring your excitement and we’ll provide the whistles! There’s gonna be a Ceilidh!
Music – Beat Your Heart Out!
Instructor: Fana Soro
Dates Available: Session C – July 22 – July 28, 2012
Hereditary Master Fana Soro will explore the basic and simple techniques of playing West Africa’s most popular hand drum the djembe. Campers will learn rhythms and songs from Cote d’Ivoire such as Mandjani, Boloye and Yankady. Through these traditional rhythms Fana will highlight how Africans have been benefiting for hundreds of years from the positive effects of drumming – physical fitness, spiritual connection, emotional well-being, stress-reduction, concentration, historical connection and most importantly, social experiences and how drums bring a community together.
